Inspired by her ongoing series Returning to the Source I & II, artist Elsa Gebreyesus invites us on a journey—back to where it all began. In the Emerald Muse Sabiala she calls on the memory of East Africa not as a place, but as a pulse. The ancestral hum beneath the surface of all things.

Lyrical markings swirl across a field of deep green—symbols from Fidel, the ancient phonetic script of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Shapes echo the architecture of nature: honeycombs, spirals, cellular forms—each one a reminder that we are not separate from the world, but structured by it.

Rendered in saturated greens and sun-warmed ochres, Emerald Muse is a Sabiala for those who lead with instinct and insight. It holds the mystery of language, the rhythm of history, and the quiet certainty that beauty has always come from the source.

Meet the Sabiala Artist

Elsa Gebreyesus

Emerald Muse

Elsa Gebreyesus lived in Ethiopia, Kenya, and United States before going to receive her BA from Brock University in Ontario, Canada. After Eritrea won its independence from Ethiopia, she lived there for five years, working as a Project Officer with an indigenous women’s organization. After leaving Eritrea, she came to the U. S. where she’s been pursuing her lifelong passion for art. In addition to her passion for art, she also volunteers and works with organizations involved with human rights issues especially in Africa. She continues to learn from artists she admires and has been greatly influenced by modernist painters from both Africa and the West.
